Buying a Franchise
Buying a franchise has many benefits over starting up a business on your own. Brand recognition, training, support, group marketing to name a few. There are a few traps, so here are a few tips if you are considering buying a franchise.
- Unless the franchise is a household name you trust, it is a good idea to check they are a member of the Franchise Council of Australia. FCA Members must abide by Member Standards, also available on the FCA website.
- Do your homework. Is the price reasonable, based on your anticipated income and the probable resale value of the franchise?
- Talk to one or more existing franchisees to find out if they are happy with the level of support and amount of work they receive.
- Most franchises also charge an on-going royalty. Think about what you are actually getting for this royalty - is it reasonable?
- If you can, spend some time working in the industry into which you are considering buying, prior to committing to the purchase.
- Visit the Franchise Council of Australia's website for more information on the benefits and pitfalls of buying a franchise.
